Alternative Harvest Treatment

An alternative harvest is the management of a parcel of land that favors shade-tolerant species such as yellow birch, sugar maple, and white spruce, and eliminates balsam fir completely from the landbase. This special treatment allows for a more diverse forest.
To conduct this type of treatment, one must first have their land cruised by one of our Forest Technicians. Once that is done, seed tree harvesting or commercial thinning can take place on the landbase in stages, to achieve uneven aged stands throughout. After these treatments have been completed, the stand should regenerate in uneven aged, shade tolerant species, providing the landowner with a diverse, commercially viable parcel of land.
